What will the product be like and how will it work?

Inital storyboards

Inital storyboards

My short film is about an 18-year-old girl who has anxiety and uses her social media on her phone as a coping mechanism for her anxiety (her phone is her identity/she hides behind her phone screen). Every morning, the girl wakes up and immediately picks up her phone to scroll through her social media; she usually spends close to an hour doing this every morning instead of getting out of bed. The girl can’t seem to go anywhere without her phone. Whenever the girl gets phone calls, she suffers from an anxiety attack. She gets a phone call from an unknown number and ends up throwing her phone to the wall due to her panic attacks, which causes her phone to break; this creates a sense of distress and chaos for the girl. She wraps her phone up in bandages, keeps it in her arms, and goes into town. She gets a coffee to calm down, but she thinks everyone is staring at her, causing her to feel paranoid. As her phone isn’t working anymore, she doesn’t feel normal or safe. At the end of the short film, the girl goes to a phone shop to buy a new phone, but her current phone has been the only thing that has made her happy and cope with her anxiety, so she doesn’t want to replace it as she is scared that a new one wouldn’t provide the same security and happiness as the current one. The amount of choices, stress and upset overwhelms her and causes her to run out of the shop, crying, and rocks her phone in her arms.

Location research, photos and analysis

This is the location of where the 'house' scenes were filmed. This is my house, so it was easily accessible and I knew where was best to film. It was easy for Hannah to get to my house as she lives nearby.

This location is where the 'café' scenes were filmed. This café was very helpful, as they said I could film the shots required for my short film after I called them and asked beforehand. This café was easily accessible for all the filming crew and actors, and we didn't receive any complaints from the public when filming there.

This location is where I filmed the 'phone shop' shots. Similar to Caffe Nero, Carphone Warehouse was helpful because I asked them if I could film my shots in their shop and they were happy to let me. The main problem I had with this location is that it is quite a small shop and customers kept walking past the camera.

Questionnaires

Actor profiles

Main character: Hannah Wakely.

I chose Hannah to act as the main character for my short film because she is the appropriate age to play this character, therefore meaning that my target audience will relate to her character on some level, making the short film appeal to them.

Extras in order: Moya Ndaiye, Sarah Adams, Yana Marinova.

I chose these people to act as extras in the café, as they look old enough to be in town on their own, and they were up for acting in my short film. In my short film, these people will appear, in Hannah’s mind, to be staring at Hannah’s character in the coffee shop, but she’s just imagining it.

Revised storyboards

Revised shooting scripts

How did storyboarding, scripting, planning and shooting go? What problems did you face and how did you overcome them?

I found that storyboarding went well and that I managed to follow them during shooting, however I made mistakes when I revised my storyboards by mixed up the shot numbers, and this caused a little bit of confusion.

Scripting went well, and I didn't need to make any revisions.

Shooting went really well. All of my actors turned up on time, I didn't have any problems with the equipment, and I didn't forget anything. One problem I did have was that the employees in Carphone Warehouse said that the fact we kept re-filming Hannah walking through the door meant that their statistics wouldn't be reliable in terms of customer numbers, so we were asked to stop filming that shot.

Planning, over, all, went well too. It was quite a tedious process, but I got the outcome that I wanted.

How did editing go? What problems were faced and how did you deal with them?

Overall, I find that editing was the aspect of my production that was the best. I had experience from my AS project, which therefore increased my confidence in terms of editing. It was a tedious process, but I didn't have any problems.
